1088 LANDMINES FOUND AND DESTROYED IN BOSNIA THIS YEAR

SARAJEVO, Bosnia (September 8,2008) - In Bosnia,in 2008,1.05 million square meters of risk surface has been technically searched and cleared of mines which is 37.40% of the plan, as it was reported by the Bosnian State Center for Mine Clearance (BHMAC).

As it was stated by the BHMAC spokesperson clearance operations destroyed 1.088 land mines or in average 10.28 mines per hectare.

Estimates show that the current size of the mined surface in Bosnia is 1.735.69 km2 or 3.39% of the territory while 1631 communities are identified as endangered by unexploded devices.

Locations under mines and unexploded devices directly influence safety of about 921.513 Bosnian citizens.Since 1996 until today, 1661 Bosnian citizens were injured due to due to mines out of which 484 were killed. This year 33 Bosnian citizens were injured by landmines while 16 of them were killed.

It is estimated that Bosnia could be landmines free by 2019. Assets necessary for realization of this plan are approx. 80 million Bosnian Marks a year.
