MIROSLAV LAJCAK: JUSTICE FOR GENOCIDE VICTIMS REMAINS OUR KEY PRIORITY

SARAJEVO, Bosnia (October 14,2007) - The International Community's High Representative and EU Special Representative in Bosnia, Miroslav Lajčák told the representatives of genocide victims’ associations from Bosnia that bringing war criminals to justice is a key priority of the international community.

“My priority is truth, justice and responsibility for the crimes committed in Bosnia. The work that has been done is this area is far from enough”, Lajčák said.

“I will continue to push for the rapid adoption of a Bosnian National War Crimes Strategy by the relevant institutions that will make prosecution of war crimes more efficient and coherent.”

In addition, a team of experience international investigators will soon join the Bosnian Prosecutor’s Office to help in the investigation and prosecution of genocide and other war crimes committed by the genocidal Serbian aggressor in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica.

The genocide victims’ associations expressed their full support for the efforts of the High Representative.

The meeting was convened at the initiative of the association “Mothers of Srebrenica and Zepa Enclave”, the association “Women Victims of War” and the “Bosnian Association of Concentration Camp Survivors”.

BOSNIAN FORENSIC EXPERTS EXUME MORE SKELETON REMAINS OF GENOCIDE VICTIMS FROM A MASS GRAVE NEAR SREBRENICA

SREBRENICA, Bosnia (October 14,2007) - Bosnian authorities said forensic experts have exhumed the bodies of more than 220 genocide victims of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre carried out by the genocidal Serbian aggressor from a mass grave in eastern Bosnia.

Bosnian official Murat Hurtic said the grave, discovered three weeks ago, contained 34 complete skeleton remains of the genocide victims and the partial remains of 192 others in the village of Zeleni Jadar, 15 kilometers south of Srebrenica. He said bullets and some personal documents also were recovered.

Hurtic said many of the skeleton remains of the genocide victims were crushed, indicating the victims had been killed elsewhere and their bodies reburied with bulldozers by the Serbian aggressor. He also said Bosnian experts will open another mass grave in the same area next week.

The systematic murdering by the genocidal Serbian aggressor of up to 10,000 Bosnian men and boys is considered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) an act of genocide and the worst massacre in Europe since World War II.

So far, about 3,000 remains of the genocide victims have been identified and reburied. The partial remains of 5,000 more genocide victims are still waiting to be identified.

WITNESS AT TRIAL OF FOUR CROATIAN WAR CRIMINALS REVEALS HER RECOLLECTIONS OF 80 DAYS SPENT IN VOJNO CONCENTRATION CAMP

SARAJEVO, Bosnia (October 14,2007) - Protected prosecution witness stated at the trial before the Bosnian State Court of Croatian war criminals Marko Radic,Dragan Sunjic,Damir Brekalo and Mirko Vracevic to have been detained for 80 days, together with her two-year son, in the southern Bosnian village of Vojno, Mostar municipality.

The Croatian aggressor turned the settlement into a concentration camp for Bosnian civilians in 1993,during the Croatian aggression against Bosnia.

"Members of HVO came to our apartment on 13 September 1993. They took me, my mother, my toddler son and husband. We were taken to Vojno concentration camp, together with one more family. Women stayed in a house, that had two rooms. Instead of glass, the windows were covered with wooden boards," the witness has said.

Bosnian State Prosecutor charges Croatian war criminals Marko Radic, known as Maka, Dragan Sunjic, known as Petarda, Damir Brekalo and Mirko Vracevic, as members of the Croatian aggressor's formations, with having participated in the torture, mental and physical maltreatment, daily beating, unlawful capture and detention of Bosnian civilians.

Describing the conditions in Vojno concentration camp, the witness has said that the detainees used to get three meals a day, but "the lunch consisted of pork, bread that was ten days old, and the supper was made of stinky fish that was not edible".

"The children did not get milk. On one occasion, before entering our room, Dragan Sunjic, Mirko Vracevic and deceased concentration camp commander Marko Mihalj poured some milk and gave it to a cat and a dog who were in front of the house, while our children were looking at them," the witness has said.

During direct examination, the witness has said that she saw Croatian war criminal Marko Radic twice during her detention. The first time she saw him was "when she was invited to the headquarters," and the second time when the exchange was conducted on 2 December 1993.

The witness has said that Croatian war criminal Vracevic was a guard and she claims to have never seen Croatian war criminal Damir Brekalo. She has recalled that the detainees had to address Sunjic as "Mister Deputy Commander".

Protected witness has also said that women performed forced labour. She has recalled that she once had to clean "the garage in which Bosnian men were detained".

"When I entered I saw blood on the floor and walls, everything was covered with blood. I shall remember this all my life. It smelled so bad that I had to throw up immediately," the witness has said, adding that she did not see any detainees, because, as far as she knows, they all "performed forced labour" at the time.

The trial of Croatian war criminals Marko Radic,Dragan Sunjic,Damir Brekalo and Mirko Vracevic before the Bosnian State Court is due to continue on 29 October.

FAMILY PROVIDES ALIBI FOR SERBIAN WAR CRIMINAL MILADIN STEVANOVIC

SARAJEVO, Bosnia (October 14,2007) - Five Defence witnesses have spoken before the Bosnian State Court about Serbian war criminal Miladin Stevanovic's personality, while his aunt and uncle provided him with an alibi.

Defence witnesses at the trial of Serbian war criminal Miladin Stevanovic, one of 11 Serbian war criminals charged with genocide for murdering around 1,000 Bosnian civilians in the eastern Bosnian village Kravica, have spoken about his relationships with Bosnians and provided an alibi for 13 July 1995, when, according to the indictment, the crime of genocide was committed by the Serbian aggressor.

Stevanovic's aunt and uncle, Radenka and Petko Petrovic, who are Serbians living in Bosnia, have said that, on 13 July 1995 – one day after St. Peter's Day - Miladin and "his friend" came for lunch to their house in Bratunac, where they lived at the time. They both claim that Serbian war criminal Miladin Stevanovic arrived at about 13:00 and left at about 17:00 hours, and that he was uniformed and was carried an automatic gun.

The Bosnian State Prosecutor considers that, on 13 July 1995, the 11 indicted Serbian war criminals conducted "safety operations" on the territory of Bratunac municipality, and that they participated in the capture and arrest of several thousand Bosnian civilians who were then gathered at a meadow in Sandici. Several thousands of them were taken by the genocidal Serbian aggressor to Kravica from that location in the course of the day.

The indictment alleges that Serbian war criminals Milos Stupar, Milenko Trifunovic, Petar Mitrovic, Brano Dzinic, Aleksandar Radovanovic, Slobodan Jakovljevic, Miladin Stevanovic, Velibor Maksimovic, Dragisa Zivanovic, Branislav Medan and Milovan Matic participated in the murderin of about 1000 Bosnian civilians in Kravica in the evening hours.

Witnesses Hajrija Djozic and Mula Bajrami, both Bosnians, have said that they were friends with Stevanovic and his family prior to the 1992-1995 Serbian aggression against Bosnia and that they always "got along nicely".

After the war Mujo Salihovic, Vice President of Skelani local community unit, cooperated, by nature of his job, with local policemen, including Miladin Stevanovic, Milenko Trifunovic, Aleksandar Radovanovic and Velibor Maksimovic. He claims that all of them "behaved in a correct manner" in their contacts with the Bosnians, who returned to Skelane a few years after the genocide.

At the next hearing before the Bosnian State Court, scheduled on 17 October, the defence team of Serbian war criminal Brano Dzinic is due to start presenting evidence.

BOSNIAN STATE PROSECUTOR PRESENTED EVIDENCE AT TRIAL OF FOUR SERBIAN WAR CRIMINALS

SARAJEVO, Bosnia (October 14,2007) - The Bosnian State Prosector has presented a series of documents to the Trial Chamber of the Bosnian State Court at the trial of four Serbian war criminals Zeljko Mejakic, Momcilo Gruban, Dusan Fustar and Dusko Knezevic as material evidence.

The Bosnian State Prosecutor has presented an order issued by the Public Security Centre from Banja Luka, which also covered Prijedor, indicating that prisoners "should be treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention". Other documents have also been presented, by which the Prosecution is trying to prove allegations contained in the indictment that there was a plan for taking over the control of Prijedor municipality.

The Bosnian State Prosecutor charges Serbian war criminals Zeljko Mejakic, Momcilo Gruban, Dusan Fustar and Dusko Knezevic with having participated in rape, torture, murder and beating of Bosnian and Croatian civilians detained by the genocidal Serbian aggressor in Omarska and Keraterm concentration camps in the course of 1992,during the Serbian aggression against Bosnia.

Indictee Fustar's defence attorney Dragan Ivetic has objected to the inclusion of the Public Security Centre's order dated August 1992, because "it does not concern the indictees and it is irrelevant".

"The Prosecution considers this document relevant, because the question of what led to the issuance of such an order is a legitimate question," the Bosnian State Prosecutor Peter Kidd has explained, The Trial Chamber has admitted the document after hearing his explanation.

The Bosnian State Prosecutor has also presented four lists containing names of 97 persons who "should be apprehended to the collection centre in Omarska" dated June and July 1992. It has also presented a list of reserve policemen of Serbian origin living in Bosnia of the Public Security Centre in Prijedor who were "engaged in Omarska and Keraterm".

The 37 pieces of material evidence presented, on 11 October, by the Bosnian State Prosecutor also include a letter signed by Serbian war criminal Simo Drljaca, dated October 1995, concerning assignment of a rank to Serbian war criminal Zeljko Mejakic.

"The letter indicates that Serbian war criminal Mejakic performed the functions of wartime police station commander in Omarska from April 1992 to July 1993," Kidd has said.

Attorney Ivetic has pointed out that the document contains "incorrect information" and that its "authenticity is questionable".

"Mejakic says that he saw this document for the first time when he was in The Hague. He also says it contains incorrect information. The authenticity of the document is questionable and I hope the Prosecution of Bosnia does not think that each document obtained from The Hague is correct," Ivetic has said.

The indictment alleges that, from 24 May to 30 August 1992, Serbian war criminal Zeljko Mejakic was commander of Omarska concentration camp, in which around 3,000 Bosnian and Croatian civilians were detained by the genocidal Serbian aggressor.

According to the indictment filed in The Hague,Serbian war criminal Simo Drljaca was a member of the Emergency Headquarters in Prijedor and Chief of the Public Security Centre in Banja Luka from 30 April to 31 December 1992. In July 1997, he was killed in the course of an arrest operation conducted by SFOR as per an order issued by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

The Bosnian State Prosecutor has also presented a solemn oath of police officers signed by Gruban in May 1992, Guidelines on Organisation and Activities of Serbs in Extraordinary Circumstances dated December 1991, Decision on Attachment of the illegal "Autonomous Region of Krajina", Decision on Strategic Objectives of the Serbian population living in Bosnia dated May 1992.

GREECE EDGE PAST BOSNIA

ATHENS, Greece (October 14,2007) - Greece won against Bosnia 3-2 in a scrappy performance in their Euro 2008 Group C qualifier on Saturday, opening up a four-point lead over second-placed Turkey and edging closer to qualification.

The defending champions reacted quickly after the Bosnians equalised early in the second half, scoring twice in 15 minutes to seal the match. Bosnia pulled one back in injury time.

"We are leading in the final stretch of our race but do not think we are through yet.A goal is a goal when the whole ball passes the line and we are mathematically not through yet," Greece coach Otto Rehhagel siad.

Rehhagel, seeking an early goal, unusually fielded three strikers to pile on the pressure. The Greeks' efforts paid off after 10 minutes when Angelos Charisteas headed a cross by Christos Patzatsoglou onto the bar, saw his rebound shot blocked by defenders but tapped it in with his third attempt.
Giorgos Karagounis came close in the 24th minute but had his powerful drive from 20 metres tipped over the bar by Adnan Guso.

Greece could have scored again in the 39th when Charisteas combined well with Yannis Amanatidis and Fanis Gekas but the latter's close-range effort was saved well by Guso.

The Bosnians grabbed an equaliser in the 54th minute with a curling free kick by Hrgovic, who was sent off a minute later for a hard tackle on Angelos Basinas.

The Greeks went ahead again two minutes later when Gekas chested down a beautiful chip by Basinas and fired past Guso. Nikos Lyberopoulos added a third in the 72nd, a minute after coming on, with a fine volley after first hitting the post with a header.

The Bosnians scored their second in injury time when substitute Vedad Ibisevic pounced on a deflection in the box to slot the ball past Nikopolidis.
